A Brilliant Kick-Off for the new FISC Legendary Circuits season

A full grid, four different classes under two litres, eight different class winners and a new track record were the results of a brilliant kick-off for the new FISC Legendary Circuits season.
Michel Lombard (B) took the honours of the first victory of the new season by finishing first in his Alpine A110 (1300 class) followed, at an 8 seconds distance, by Hans Dullaert (NL) in his MG Midget and Alain Delarche (F) four seconds later in his Lotus Seven; Dullaert and Delarche both campaigning in the 1650 class.
Race two, on the Sunday morning, ultimately proved to be the race of the weekend, with fights all down the field. Lombard, starting from pole, soon found himself in third spot, while Pieter Bakker (NL) in his AH ‘Monza’ Sprite and starting from fourth place, only needed half a lap to pass Dullaert, Delarche and Lombard, leaving the three to dispute second place, while he pulled away into the lead. Halfway, Dullaert managed to free himself from the group and slowly reeled in Bakker, even overtaking him on lap seven. Although the two were taking their fight to the edge, trading places regularly, they still managed to pull away from the field. In the end Dullaert won with Bakker snapping at his heels, the two separated only by 0.035 sec’s at the finish line, while Delarche finished a distant third.
Race three on the Sunday early afternoon, saw a completely different development. Dullaert now starting from pole, was soon overtaken by Bakker, who seemed to drive away effortlessly. However, he soon found himself in big trouble, with dropping oil pressure eventually forcing him out of the race. Dullaert was once again in charge now, this time followed by Delarche and Thierry Lortal (F) in his Caterham, the two French heavily disputing second place, which was eventually won by Lortal.
Results and pictures can be found at;
The next event in FISC Legendary Circuits’ schedule is at the Belgium circuit of Zolder, the Superleague weekend of 17-19 July ‘09.

'LEGENDARY CIRCUITS' MIXES WELL WITH LOTUS TROPHY

Such was the success of the combined effort of FISC EuroTour's Legendary Circuits series and the French Trophée Lotus, that one is already talking about the opportunity to stretch the working relationship into 2009. A record breaking 38 car grid was the result of the first effort to amalgamate grids and offer better racing then ever before to both the drivers and the public.
Contrary to many grids -  generally offering nothing more then a parade of cars - the Throphee Lotus – Legendary Circuits combination offered a sight of cars crawling over each others back all down the field and until the finish line.
The Porsche 911’s of Dutch drivers Caresani, Kooy and Melse proved to be the icing on the cake. Power sliding their cars, in a very controlled manner, around every corner, fully using the Dunlop vintage tyres’ grip – or was it the lack off? -, they managed to get the hands of the French audience together lap after lap.
Of course Lotus Seven’s everywhere, dominating the Caterhams which were participating, but in a different class. Up front we also found the original aluminium bodied Lotus XI of Christian Cane (F), a beautiful piece of English craftsmanship. Another interesting entry was the original Pon - van Lennep Porsche 904, this time entered by Michiel van Duijvendijk (NL), which had to start from the back of the grid after missing practice, but managed to get up front in an eventful race. AH Sprites and MG Midgets are still well represented, but nowadays only racing in period configuration. Mark Dols (NL), racing his Williams & Pritchard Sebring GT proved to be the highlight of this still spectacular class. Englishman Richard Evans and Dutchman Hans Dullaert, both racing their open MG Lenham Midgets, proving their strength by ending up front repeatedly. Already developments are on its way to build on the success of this years’ competition involving only Legendary Circuits as before.

MORGANS DOMINATE IN HOLLAND

Although the Morgan’s won two out of the three races in the FISC EuroTour’s Grand Prix Classic meeting on September 13th and 14th, the third victory was taken by an AH Sprite with the narrowest of margins, of only 0.021 sec’shree different race winners were the result of a wonderful weekend of friendly, but competitive racing.
The weekend saw all kinds of different weather circumstances, beginning with free practice on the Friday in the rain, qualifying and race #1 on the Saturday in damp conditions and race #2 and #3 under a blue sky on the Sunday.
Two Morgans took the podium in race #1, the lightweight roadster of Roger Whiteside (UK) on top, second, the open AH Sprite of Hans Dullaert (NL) and third, came Leigh Sebba (UK) in his Morgan +8; Whiteside winning with a margin of 4.780 sec’s and another 10 sec’s separating Dullaert and Sebba.
Whiteside, now on pole in the second race, saw the two Sprites of Dullaert and Mark Dols (NL) crawling over his back in the first lap. The track still damp, and the heavy beast still on cold tyres, invited the car to run wide halfway, ending up in the gravel trap, never to return. Nevertheless the Sprites were unable to fight off Sebba in his +8, who took overall honours closely followed by Dullaert and Pieter Bakker (NL) taking third in his AH “Monza” Sprite.
Sebba, inheriting pole for the third race, already lost his advantage in the first “Tarzan” corner, Dullaert and Bakker now fighting it out side by side and Bakker only taking the lead in the fifth "Scheivlak" corner. An unjustified drive-through penalty took Bakker out, leaving the fun to Dullaert, Sebba and Dols; the first one taking overall honours, shadowed by Sebba with a spectacular margin of only 0.021 sec’s and Dols a distant third.
The next event is the Trophées Historiques de Bourgogne at Dijon Prenois (F) over the weekend of October 9-12.…ends…

MELSE TRIUMPHS AT THE NORDSCHLEIFE

Dutch driver, Hank Melse, took a victory in the FISC EuroTour race at the 10th Eifel Mountains Classic meeting at the Nürburgring - Nordschleife on Saturday 5 July.
Early on the Saturday morning, the FISC EuroTour grid came out first, the track still damp in places, but was quickly drying up. Eventually it was Melse, who qualified his 2ltr Porsche 911 fastest, with Bakker (NL)  in his AH ‘Monza’ Sprite only half a second slower. Third on the grid was the British Caterham 7 Classic driver Graeme Smith directly followed by Peter van Hoepen (NL), who recently dominated the RMU Spa Classic in his impressive open Chevrolet Stingray.  Hans Dullaert (NL) in his open Lenham bodied MG Midget came 5th and Fred Corporaal in his 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SV came 6th.
Around midday, the grid was led to the starting area by a classy Mini 7 pacecar. When the red lights went off, Van Hoepen made serious use of all the brake horsepower available to him and catapulted himself into the lead, only to be caught in the first hairpin by Melse’s Porsche. Melse, in the lighter car, immediately established a comfortable lead, which was clawed back by van Hoepen on the long 3,5 km straight leading to the start- and finish line. This game repeated itself lap after lap, handing Melse outright victory on his first appearance in the FISC EuroTour – Legendary Circuits Series.
The second pair Smith and Dullaert, started in a very competitive way, Dullaert trailing the quicker Caterham 7 Classic, but never able to really take advantage of his superior circuit knowledge.
Stijn Bauland (NL) in his AH Frogeye, coming from 8th on the grid, steadily progressed to 5th at the finish line, with Corporaal in his shade.
The next event is the Grand Prix Classic at Zandvoort over the weekend of September 12-14.

DUTCH DRIVERS DOMINATE SPA

The FISC EuroTour enjoyed its first event of the 2008 season at the Spa Francorchamps circuit with a successful amalgamation of its races with the Dutch Historic Championship, the regular FISC EuroTour pilots proving themselves particularly competitive in the opening race of the weekend.
Dutchman, Peter van Hoepen, made it a hat trick at Spa in his Chevrolet Stingray in the hotly contested RMU Classic over the weekend of May 16 to 18.
Not far behind them however, against considerable opposition of some bigger cars, were the first two FISC EuroTour drivers. Richard Evans (UK) in his Lenham Midget was hot on the tail of Jean Paul Batenburg (NL) in his Ford Mustang followed by Adam Cunnington (UK) in his AH Sprite. The pair taking commendable 6th and 7th place and fighting till the end.
In race two, Spa showed its true character when the skies really opened up and soon after Eau Rouge corner transformed into the ‘brook’ it is named after.
The weather circumstances now clearly in favour of the smaller cars, resulting in 3rd place for Richard Evans midway the race. With the weather clearing up at the end of the race Evans was soon repassed by the bigger cars ending in 6th place again.
The third race of the weekend was the best of the RMU Classic with two Stingrays and an Iso Rivolta trading places all race and fighting it out till the finish line. A second group involved the Ford Cortina GT of Deenik and the Lenham Midgets of Dullaert and Halewijn.

FISC EUROTOUR LAUNCHES PROFIT SHARE

European historic racing series, FISC EuroTour, is offering a unique ‘profit share’ system to its members who race in 2008.
As a ‘not for profit’ organisation, the FISC EuroTour determines its annual entry fee based on the likely number of entries for the forthcoming season. Should the income from the 2008 season exceed the cost of running the series, the surplus generated will be used to subsidise the entry fees of the 2008 members who race in 2009.
Pieter Bakker, FISC EuroTour’s founder said, “We feel this is a very fair way to reward those drivers who appreciate the value offered by the FISC EuroTour and wish to stay loyal to the series. It should also encourage even more members to join and to see their involvement as a longer term one. Even without the profit share arrangement, we are probably the best value historic series on the planet. With this innovation, we will be impossible to resist for any driver of a well turned out classic sports or saloon car.”
This year’s series takes in the four premier classic circuits in Europe of Nordschleife, Dijon, Zandvoort and Spa, with UK drivers able to compete with the benefit of only a National A licence.
Sub 2 litre Pre’ 1971 saloon and sports cars are eligible with an average of two hours track time at each meeting, the Nordschleife even offering 4 hours of track time.
The FISC EuroTour season gets under way at Spa-Francorchamps on the 16 May 2008 and membership places are available via the website, www.fisc-eurotour.org.

FISC EUROTOUR RETURNS TO SPA

Historic racing series, FISC EuroTour, is returning to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in 2008, offering the club competitor a rare opportunity to race at this legendary venue.
Having established itself over the last 15 years as probably the most accessible way to race at the very best historic GP circuits, the series has notched up a record of competition at circuits such as Monza, the Nordschleife, Dijon, Montlhéry, Brands Hatch GP, Clermont Ferrand (Charade), Le Mans and Zandvoort. Having been absent from Spa for the last two years, the recently revised Belgian GP track is now back on the calendar, much to the delight of FISC EuroTour’s enthusiastic members.
Pieter Bakker, FISC EuroTour’s founder said, “Monza was possibly the jewel in our crown last year, but Spa is a very special place and our drivers have been hankering to return. With another legendary circuit, the Nordschleife, also on the agenda, plus our other favourites, Dijon and Zandvoort, I cannot imagine how we could create a more perfect season of historic racing.”
FISC EuroTour’s ‘not for profit’ philosophy ensures drivers receive tremendous value for money, able to compete internationally for around the same, or often less than, the cost of a season of club racing at home.
A wide range of sub 2 litre pre-1971 saloon and sports cars are eligible to take part, with the needs of the competitor very much in mind, from scrutineering at one’s own paddock space, through full team hospitality for the whole weekend and plenty of recovery time between race weekends, making for a low stress season.
Track time is also plentiful and far superior to that of the average national championship. The Nordschleife weekend, for example, includes around 4 hours of circuit driving, the other meetings having two hours as a matter of course.
The FISC EuroTour season kicks off at Spa-Francorchamps on the 16 May 2008 and there are still some places available.

ENGLISH DRIVERS DOMINATE MONZA

Englishman, Adam Cunnington, took two out of three victories in the hotly contested BMC A Series of the FISC EuroTour in the International AVD Race Weekend at Monza over the weekend of September 28 to 30.
Both Cunnington’s victories were unchallenged, a strong contrast to the first race of the weekend which went to fellow English driver, John Moon, after a tremendous slip streaming battle throughout the 13 laps. The race was only decided at the line by .080 of a second after Moon’s Frogeye trailed Cunnington’s Mk III Midget into Parabolica, making the tow work for him as they raced to the line, just nosing ahead. Dutch driver, Pieter Bakker, who had also been in on the action for much of the race, claimed a close third in his aptly named 'Monza' Sprite.
Race two saw Cunnington break clear and build a substantial gap after Moon was initially hampered by unscrubbed rear tyres. This allowed Dutchman, Hans Dullaert to move through and take the runner up spot, with Moon third, his front brakes completely worn out.
The third race of the weekend again saw Cunnington build an early lead, Dullaert choosing incorrect full wet tyres in the damp conditions. Moon was again held back in the first few laps with unfamiliar brakes, but as these came in, the Frogeye’s pace resumed to that of race one, but with Cunnington now too far ahead to be caught. Moon had to settle for second some 12 seconds ahead of the newly built Ashley Sprite of Dutchman, Mark Dols.
In the Legendary Circuits Series, UK drivers, Hugh Maund and Jon Wolf both took victories in their Triumphs.
The FISC EuroTour now resumes next season with a return to Spa in May.

WOLFE TRIUMPHS AT NORDSCHLEIFE

English driver, Jon Wolfe, took outright victory on his second FISC EuroTour appearance at the 9th Eifel Mountains Classic meeting at the Nordschleife on Saturday August 18, after a tremendous battle with regular drivers Pieter Bakker and Richard Evans.
Wolfe qualified his 200 bhp Triumph GT6 5th fastest, with Evans and Bakker sharing the front row in their BMC A Class cars, despite giving away around 70 bhp.
Adam Cunnington was 3rd fastest in qualifying but a broken water pump had caused his engine to overheat and drop a valve. After some frantic work in the one and a half hours between qualifying and the race, helped by the Classic Car Clinic Team, Cunnington's car amazingly made it to the grid.
Alongside Cunnington's BMC A Class' Sprite was invitation class driver, Hugh Maund, in his Triumph TR7, which, with its enormous power advantage over the little cars, soon made it into the lead on the 'Grand Prix' section of the circuit.
Halfway, Bakker had found a way past though, with Evans hot on his tail and Wolfe making progress, catching the leaders by the second lap.
Cunnington had already disappeared on the first lap, victim of a bizarre incident which had seen the protruding exhaust pipe of Evans' Midget puncture his oil cooler, subsequently seizing his engine.
Dutchman Bakker and Evans continued their battle to the end, a pattern developing with Evans ahead on the twisty sections and Bakker powering his lovely Monza Sprite out of Galgenkopf to move ahead on the Döttinger Höhe straight. The pair crossed the line separated by just three tenths of a second after three quarters of an hour of racing, only two and a half seconds behind the GT6.
Maund finished 4th overall after a spin on the 'GP' section which saw Italian, Antonio Bertini, get ahead in his superb, ex Graham Hill, Speedwell Sprite. The engine of the Italian's FIA spec car refused to rev over 6500 rpm so Maund roared by on the main straight, pushing Bertini back to 5th again, but coming home 3rd in the BMC A Class car, just 1.7 seconds adrift of the TR7.
Picking up 4th and 5th in Class 5 were Dutchman Rob Halewijn and a poorly John Moon who spent the whole race in each other's company, their fastest laps a mere 14 hundredths of a second different. Dutchman Hans Dullaert had been part of their fun until he retired with oil having found its way into the distributor cap of his Mk II Midget.
Chris Dear was 6th in the BMC A eries on his Nordschleife debut and like all the drivers had benefited from an impressive potential track time of four hours, including a two hour free practice on Friday.
The FISC EuroTour's next and final meeting of the 2007 season is at Monza on September 28 to 30.

DUTCH ARE MUSTARD AT DIJON

Dutch drivers Pieter Bakker and Hans Dullaert were the stars of the show at the second FISC EuroTour weekend of the season at the prestigious Grand Prix de l'Age d'Or event at Dijon, on June 22 to 24.
Wet qualifying on Friday morning had really shaken up what is often the established order, Dullaert taking his first pole position with a stunning lap time, over two seconds clear of class 2 leader, Englishman, Chris Dear, also in his best ever position.
Having almost destroyed the front end of his MkII Midget in a first lap collision at the high speed Courbe de Pouas in race one, Dullaert was back in action on Saturday morning courtesy of some amazing rebuild work by the Dutch Classic Car Clinic team.
In conditions which were the worst experienced by many of the leading FISC drivers, Dullaert was in a class of his own, cutting through the torrential rain from the back of the grid, to take a simply amazing victory, some 23 seconds clear of fellow countryman, Bakker. To add to the fairy tale story, which included a fastest lap almost four seconds clear of his closest rival, Dullaert underwent heart valve replacement surgery in March of this year.
Bakker had also been a victim of the first lap oil which claimed Dullaert and others in race one, but had managed to recover to take second place behind English driver Adam Cunnington, another first lap spinner.
The wet race two saw Bakker repeat his second place, rounding off his weekend by guiding his superb Monza Sprite to another second overall and first in Class in the final race of the weekend. Final victory of the weekend went to the Dutchman Bert Du Toy van Hees in his Lotus Elan S3.
Overall winner on aggregate result for the weekend was Bakker, with Cunnington 2nd and Robert Halewijn 3rd, with Du Toy van Hees setting fastest lap in his Elan.
The next event in FISC EuroTour's 'Legendary Circuits Series' schedule is at the Nordschleife over the weekend of 17-18 August 2007.

PETER PERFECT IN HOLLAND

Although English driver, Hugh Maund, was the 'on the road' winner in two of the three races in the FISC EuroTour's Historic Zandvoort Trophy meeting on May 19 and 20, it was his fellow countryman, Peter Hiley, who was the 'man of the meeting'.
Maund's TR7 was the sole invitation class entry, so the real competition occurred behind him in the traditional class for 1380cc Sprites and Midgets, where the action was as fast and furious as ever, in this the opening meeting of the season.
Hiley's trio of victories came after a year of development to his MK II Midget, the first two being unopposed from flag to flag.
Race three was a little tougher, with Hiley busy defending David Gibson at the first corner, allowing John Moon's Frogeye to charge through and open a commanding lead, Dutchman Pieter Bakker and Adam Cunnington, joining in the action.
Hiley eventually broke clear, setting a stunning pace to catch Moon, who was by then suffering from gearbox problems. Hiley crossed the line almost 5 seconds clear to complete a perfect weekend, leaving the others to contemplate where to find the extra pace they will need as the season moves on to the likes of Monza, Dijon, and the Nordschleife.
Gibson drove in his usual relentless style, claiming two runner up places and a close third behind Moon in the final race.

MONZA, NORDSCHLEIFE, DIJON & ZANDVOORT FOR FISC EUROTOUR SERIES!

Europe's foremost classic 'Grand Prix' circuits are now in reach of virtually any driver, with the announcement of the 2007 calendar from FISC EuroTour.
The 14 year old series has become recognised as providing the best value classic and historic racing on renowned circuits in Europe, but this year has surpassed itself with a ten race schedule incorporating Monza, the Nordschleife, Dijon and Zandvoort for an all in price of €2,850, or around £1,900 for UK competitors.
What's more, the price includes full team hospitality at all venues and a 75 minute qualifying session at the Nordschleife. Drivers from the UK benefit from a unique ferry crossing package for all events, saving a substantial amount on the true cost.
All BMC A series engined saloon and sports cars built prior to 1971 are eligible to race in the full series. Drivers of sub 2 litre 'classic' or period sportscars can also take part in FISC EuroTour's 'Legendary Circuits' series at Monza, Zandvoort and the Nordschleife for an even more affordable €1,995 (around £1,300!).
This will be the first time the FISC EuroTour has visited Monza and founder, Pieter Bakker is very excited at the prospect. He said, " Our members have long been keen to experience this incredible circuit, having already grown accustomed to racing at venues others only dream about. To be able to incorporate Monza into our schedule, whilst also keeping the cost for the year so low is something we are very proud of and I can think of no other championship or series which offers anywhere this quality of programme, racing or value."
Another attraction of FISC EuroTour to many competitors is that the series is spread over just four race weekends, meaning a fewer number of commitments away from home, whilst still enjoying a ten race programme and over 8 hours of track time. Gaps of between four and eight weeks between events allow for a relaxed schedule and plenty of preparation and recovery time in between.
Further information can be obtained from the club's stand A50 in Speed Street at 'Race Retro' - the International Historic Motorsport Show at Stoneleigh, from March 23 to 25.
